Virtual photography, also called game photography or screenshot photography, is a form of new media art where players capture screenshots from within video game worlds. It’s an emerging art form that’s even been displayed in physical galleries around the globe. However, it sometimes raises questions about legality and artistic ownership since the virtual photographer is working within game environments created by others. But much like traditional photographers, virtual photographers aim to capture striking imagery, freeze memories in time, and show off their technical skills.

By profession, I am a photographer and a web designer. Gaming, for me, is a hobby an escape into fantastical worlds. And over time, I’ve developed a passion for capturing those moments within games. Thanks to technology, we can now take in-game screenshots and immortalize the beauty of these virtual worlds. That’s virtual photography, and it’s why you’re here!
As a photographer, this kind of image-making might seem unconventional compared to using a digital camera in the real world. But I find virtual photography just as rewarding as capturing landscapes or nature in real life. Games tell stories and create moments that are visually stunning. Capturing these moments brings immense satisfaction, and that’s why I built this space so everyone can share their “virtual photographs” with the world. Sharing this beauty brings joy to us all!
| STORY |
When I first wrote this, it was September of 2024, and I am 41 years old. My experience with gaming spans many years, starting in my childhood. For me, it all began with the Game Boy, playing classics like Tetris and Bomberman ’94. From there, I moved on to the Nintendo, Super Nintendo, PlayStation. Today’s gaming consoles have evolved into immersive experiences, creating virtual worlds so realistic that you can easily lose yourself in them. With the advancements in graphics and television technology, 1080p, 4K, even 8K the experience feels incredibly lifelike. Games like Red Dead Redemption 2, Far Cry, The Last of Us II, Ghost of Tsushima, and the Assassin’s Creed series showcase this beautifully, with their stunning detail and realism.
